Wonder Woman trailer breakdown: What we learned
Wonder Woman – she who can make the hawk and dove fight the war with love, who can make the liar tell it true, who can get us out from under – has done and gone dropped another trailer.
Presented by: Jesse Murray
In case you've missed trailers #1 and #2, you should watch them. And if you want some really spoiler-filled, deep-cut information about what happens in the first 20 minutes of the movie, go read Aaron Sagers' report from the film's editing bay and chat with director Patty Jenkins.
Here's the trailer:
Now, on to the things we've learned and/or are obsessing about with trailer #3:
Her Sword is a Gift From the Gods
Little Diana is shown the sword we've seen Wonder Woman wield in previous trailers. Her mom Hippolyta tells her it’s a gift from the gods and only the fiercest of Amazons could wield it. Which, Hippolyta says, is not Diana.
First -- way to build self-esteem, Mom. Second, it's clear Diana isn't listening to her mother (TYPICAL!).
Diana is Trained Harder Than Any Amazon
Claire Underwood/Princess Buttercup/Kelly Capwell from Santa Barbara (aka Robin Wright) plays Diana's aunt, Antiope. She's been tasked with training Diana and does NOT hold back. Her role in this trailer is to scream at Diana a lot and swordfight with her.
Diana Is Something ... More
We see Diana fight back against Antiope by clinging her bracelets together and creating an energy blast, similar to what we saw in Batman vs. Superman. This, clearly, is not typical Amazon behavior (as Diana even seems surprised at what she can do).
Diana Decides to Go Save the World (and Doesn't Use Doors)
After Steve Trevor crashes on the island and tells the Amazons that World War I could kill us all, Diana decides she must go save the world. Which means she's gotta get the sword we saw earlier. But rather than use the door, she leaps in, allowing us to see some more powers at work (we're guessing she's stealing it).
Diana Heads to London and Thinks It Smells
Because, well, it did back then.
Diana Throws a Tank!
Super strength at work!
The Best Line
Diana serves up her own version of a battle cry which is simultaneously awesome, totally emblematic of the character and provides a quick plot summary: "I am Diana of Themyscira. Daughter of Hippolyta. In the name of all that is good, your wrath upon this world is over."
Diana Still Doesn't Know How to Use Doors
Also, here's to hoping that tweed cloak/petticoat with sword and shield look becomes in amongst the hipster set in Fall 2017.
Interestingly, the trailer does not heavily feature the villains of the film. Ares, who we know is played by Harry Potter's David Thewlis (and is listed on IMDb as "Sir Patrick." Hmmm) is nowhere to be seen, and Danny Huston's General Ludendorff and Elena Ayana's Dr. Poison are not given significantly more time than they have in previous trailers. Perhaps that's the subject matter for trailer #4?
While the "post-theme music funny scene involving Etta Candy" is now officially a trope (it's the third time it appears. If three murders by the same person indicates a serial killer, three intentionally-placed comedic beats indicate a trope), it's a welcome one. The DC movies have gotten heat for being too dark and humorless, so any furthering of the idea that Wonder Woman will have lightness and fun is welcome.
When all is said and done, trailer #3 only made me more excited for the film. And, after Diana's battle cry above, my visceral reaction was pride. I'm proud to love Wonder Woman. All the reasoning is a think piece for another day, though.
What did YOU think of the trailer? Did it sell you more? Are you over it? What did you love/hate? Please tell us your thoughts in the comments - we want to know!
