HAPPY DEATH DAY EXCEEDS BOX OFFICE EXPECTATIONS, PROJECTED $26 MILLION WEEKEND DEBUT
Just when you thought IT couldn’t be stopped. Happy Death Day outperformed original expectations, leaving Blade Runner 2049 at second place in its second week. The Blumhouse and Universal horror flick is expected to open at $26 million versus the projected $11.5 million mark.

The film stars Jessica Rothe as the unfortunate soul who’s forced to relive her gruesome death every day until she figures out who had it out for her. It’s like Groundhog Day but without Bill Murray making life-sized ice angels of Andie MacDowell.
Comic book readers might recognize the Happy Death Day screenwriter credit: Scott Lobdell. Lobdell is famous for a lot of comics, but he’s best known for his long runs on X-Men and killing off everyone’s favorite Russian metal mutant-man: Colossus.
Blumhouse is on a preverbal roll. This year alone, the production house debuted the year with Jordan Peel’s breakout success Get Out and M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Split. Collectively, the horror films grossed $531.4 million worldwide. This is another big win, considering that Happy Death Day’s budget was only $5 million.
